Quick answer

What are patient care services in Mumbai?

Patient care services in Mumbai place a trained attendant, also called a caretaker, at the patient's home to handle daily living rather than medical procedures. The attendant bathes and dresses the patient, prepares and gives meals, manages toileting, moves the patient safely, gives prescribed oral medicines on time and tells the family when something changes. Attendants are booked by the shift, not by the visit.

What an attendant does at home in Mumbai

This is what an attendant at home in Mumbai actually spends the shift doing. Practical, repetitive work that keeps a dependent patient clean, fed, comfortable and out of hospital. Every attendant follows a care plan agreed with your family before the first shift.

Personal care and hygiene

  • Bathing, sponge baths and grooming
  • Dressing and changing clothes
  • Toileting, bedpan and diaper changes
  • Oral hygiene, nail and hair care
  • Clean bedding and a hygienic sick room

Food and medicines

  • Cooking simple meals suited to the patient's diet
  • Feeding, including patients who struggle to swallow
  • Prescribed tablets, syrups and inhalers on schedule
  • A written record of every dose given
  • Watching fluid intake and appetite

Movement and safety

  • Repositioning every two hours against bedsores
  • Bed to wheelchair and wheelchair to toilet transfers
  • Walking support and fall prevention
  • Light massage and physiotherapy exercises as advised
  • Clearing trip hazards around the bed and bathroom

Watching and reporting

  • Spotting changes in breathing, alertness, skin or appetite
  • Alerting the family and your doctor straight away
  • Arranging an ambulance in an emergency
  • Company and conversation through the day
  • Daily updates to children living abroad or working late

What an attendant will not do

Families are rarely told this before booking. An attendant is a trained caregiver, not a nurse, and the line between them is firm. Knowing where it sits stops you paying for the wrong kind of help, and stops anyone in the house expecting clinical work an attendant is not qualified to do.

An attendant does this

Non-clinical daily care

  • Bathing, grooming and changing clothes
  • Feeding and preparing the patient's meals
  • Toileting, bedpan and diaper changes
  • Giving prescribed tablets, syrups and inhalers
  • Turning the patient to prevent bedsores
  • Transfers, walking support and fall prevention
  • Reporting changes and calling for help

This needs a nurse

Clinical procedures, never done by an attendant

  • Injections of any kind, including insulin
  • IV drips and infusions
  • Wound dressing, bedsore dressing and suture care
  • Catheter insertion, change or removal
  • Ryles tube insertion and tube feeding setup
  • Tracheostomy suction and oxygen management
  • Blood sample collection, or changing any dose

Many Mumbai families book both

An attendant on shift for the daily work, and a nurse visiting for injections or dressing. We will tell you which combination the patient actually needs before you commit to anything.

Nursing in Mumbai

Attendant or nurse: which one do you need?

The short version. If the patient needs help living, book an attendant. If a doctor has prescribed a procedure, book a nurse. Plenty of households in Mumbai need both.

Male or female attendant: which to ask for

Attendant work is almost entirely personal care, so gender matters more here than for a nurse who visits to do one procedure. Say what suits the patient when you book. Stating a preference costs nothing extra.

Female attendant

What most families ask for when the patient is a woman, and especially for an elderly mother or grandmother.

  • Bathing and toileting for women patients
  • Diaper changes and personal hygiene
  • Households that prefer a woman staying overnight
  • Patients with dementia who settle better with a woman

Male attendant

Requested when someone has to be lifted daily, and by male patients who would rather a man handled their washing and toileting.

  • Lifting and shifting patients who cannot bear weight
  • Bathing and toileting for men patients
  • Bed to wheelchair transfers after stroke or paralysis
  • Night duty where the patient may need lifting

Who needs a patient care attendant in Mumbai

The situations families call us about most. The common thread is dependency rather than a particular diagnosis.

Bedridden patients

Bedridden patient care at home is turning every two hours, bed baths, diaper changes and protecting the skin. It is relentless work that exhausts a family within weeks.

Bedsore prevention · immobile patients · long-term bed rest

After surgery or a fracture

Help to wash, dress, reach the bathroom and move safely while the patient cannot bend or take weight, usually for a few weeks.

Knee and hip replacement · fracture recovery · post-operative help

Patients who need help moving

After a stroke, or with paralysis, the day is mostly transfers in and out of bed, help eating and washing on the weaker side, and repeating the exercises the physiotherapist has set between visits.

Post-stroke support · hemiplegia · paraplegia

Patients who need supervision

Dementia and Alzheimer's call for a steady routine, watchfulness against wandering, patience with the same question asked ten times, and making sure meals and medicines are genuinely taken.

Memory loss · Alzheimer's support · Parkinson's

Elderly parents living alone

Common across Mumbai where children work long hours or live abroad. Help with bathing and cooking, medicines on time, fall prevention, and someone who calls you if anything changes.

Senior citizen care · caretaker for elderly · home attendant for elderly

Comfort care through a long illness

Through cancer treatment or at the end of life, comfort-focused daily care that works alongside the nurse and doctor managing symptoms.

Palliative care at home · chemotherapy support · end-of-life care

Straight after a discharge

Hospitals send patients home with instructions and nobody to carry them out. An attendant handles the daily side while a nurse comes in for whatever was prescribed.

Post-hospitalisation care · recovery at home

When the family needs relief

The family member doing the caring burns out first, and usually quietly. Taking a few weeks off while an attendant covers is an ordinary thing to arrange, not an admission of anything.

Respite care · short-term attendant · temporary caretaker

Patient care after a hospital discharge in Mumbai

A large share of attendant bookings begin within a day or two of a discharge. Patients come home to us from Lilavati, Kokilaben, Hinduja, Nanavati, Jaslok, Breach Candy, Bombay Hospital, Fortis Mulund, Global and dozens of smaller nursing homes across the suburbs.

The hospital sends the patient home with instructions but nobody to carry them out. That first fortnight is when a family discovers how much lifting, washing and watching the day actually contains. Booking an attendant before the discharge, rather than after a difficult first night, gives us room to match the right person instead of whoever is free.

Hospital names describe where patients are discharged from. They do not imply any tie-up or affiliation.

Patient care in Mumbai: common questions

How do I hire a patient care attendant in Mumbai?

Call or WhatsApp and describe what the patient can and cannot manage alone, your locality, and whether you want a male or female attendant. Ayushya confirms whether an attendant is the right choice or the case needs a nurse, assigns someone matched to the patient and your area, and shares their details before they arrive. Attendants are booked as a 12-hour day shift, a 12-hour night shift or 24-hour cover.

Which areas of Mumbai do you cover for patient care?

The western line is our strongest coverage: Malad, Borivali, Kandivali, Goregaon, Andheri, Jogeshwari, Vile Parle, Juhu, Santacruz, Khar, Bandra, Dahisar, Mira Road and Bhayandar. We also cover Thane, Navi Mumbai including Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar, Airoli and Panvel, and Kalyan and Dombivli. Central, eastern and south Mumbai are covered too, including Dadar, Chembur, Ghatkopar, Mulund, Powai, Worli, Lower Parel and Colaba.

Do patient care attendants give injections?

No. Attendants do not give injections of any kind, including insulin, and do not set up IV drips, change dressings, insert catheters or collect blood samples. Those are nursing procedures and a qualified nurse must do them. An attendant does give tablets, syrups and inhalers that a doctor has already prescribed, at the correct time, and records that they were given.

Can I get a 24-hour attendant in a small Mumbai flat?

Yes, but it needs planning. Twenty-four hour cover is two attendants rotating, and the one who is off duty needs somewhere to rest. In a compact flat many families find two 12-hour shifts work better, because each attendant goes home between shifts and no sleeping space is needed. Tell us your flat size when booking and we will suggest which arrangement fits.

Will my housing society allow an attendant to enter?

Almost all Mumbai societies allow it, though most ask for the attendant to be registered at the gate with a photo and ID proof, and some require a letter from the flat owner. We provide the attendant's ID and police verification documents so you can complete this before the first shift rather than at the gate on day one.

Can I ask for a male or female attendant in Mumbai?

Yes, both are available across Mumbai and there is no extra charge for asking. Since an attendant spends the day on bathing, changing and toilet assistance, the majority of families here pick the same gender as the patient. Male attendants are in particular demand where somebody has to be lifted in and out of bed each day.

Can an attendant be arranged after a hospital discharge in Mumbai?

Yes, and the first fortnight at home is when families struggle most. Share the discharge summary and what the doctor has advised. Booking a day or two before the discharge gives more room to match the right attendant rather than whoever happens to be free that morning.

Do attendants cook and clean the house?

An attendant prepares basic meals for the patient and keeps the patient's room and bedding clean and hygienic. That is part of patient care. General housekeeping for the rest of the household, cooking for the family or running errands is not attendant work and should not be expected of them.
