Doctor examining a patient during a home visit

Doctor on call

Doctor Visit at Home in Mumbai

A doctor travels to you anywhere in Mumbai, examines the patient in person, explains what is wrong, writes the prescription there and then, and sets up tests or a nurse if the case calls for it. For fever, infection, parents who cannot face the journey, and recovery at home.

  • Full examination, not a phone call
  • Prescription written at the visit
  • Blood tests collected at home
  • Nursing arranged on the same prescription

For an emergency, call an ambulance on 108 rather than filling this in.

Quick answer

What is a doctor visit at home?

A doctor visit at home, also called doctor on call, is a consultation where a qualified doctor comes to the patient's residence instead of the patient travelling to a clinic. The doctor takes a history, examines the patient, checks vitals, reaches a working diagnosis, writes a prescription and arranges blood tests, nursing or a specialist referral where those are needed.

Best for

Fever, infection, elderly parents, recovery at home, bedridden patients

Not for

Emergencies. Chest pain, stroke signs or heavy bleeding need an ambulance

When to call an ambulance instead

A home visit doctor is not an emergency service. We would sooner lose the booking than have you wait on us while something serious is happening. If any of the following applies, stop reading, call 108, or get to the nearest casualty department in Mumbai.

Call an ambulance now

Do not wait for a home visit

  • Chest pain, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw
  • Sudden breathlessness, or blue lips
  • Face drooping, one-sided weakness, slurred speech
  • Unconscious, or very hard to rouse
  • A seizure, or a fit that will not stop
  • Heavy bleeding, a bad fall, or a serious injury
  • A baby or small child who has gone floppy or unresponsive

A home visit is right for

Needs examining, but is not time-critical

  • Fever that has not settled in two or three days
  • Cough, cold, throat and chest infections
  • Stomach upset, vomiting, loose motions
  • An elderly parent who cannot manage the journey
  • A review after a hospital stay or surgery
  • Bedridden patients who cannot reach a clinic
  • Routine check-ups and medication review

Not sure which side of the line you are on? Ring and describe it. Asking costs nothing, and if the answer is an ambulance rather than a doctor, that is what you will be told.

How soon a doctor can come, and what you pay

The first two questions on every call. Answered here so you do not have to ask them.

How soon

There is no fixed response time on this page, and you should be wary of sites that print one. In Mumbai it genuinely turns on your locality, the hour and who is already out on a visit. A promise that cannot be kept at 11pm is worth nothing to you.

Instead: say where you are and what has happened, and you are given the earliest slot we can genuinely hold, during that call. If the honest answer is tomorrow morning rather than tonight, you hear it immediately and can make other arrangements instead of waiting on us.

A planned visit, such as a review for an elderly parent, can be booked for a time that suits you.

What it costs

A visit fee applies and you hear the exact figure on the call, before you agree to anything. No doctor turns up at your door with a number you have not already accepted.

  • The fee covers the consultation and the prescription
  • Late-night and far-out localities can differ, and you are told which applies
  • Blood tests, medicines and a nurse are separate, and only if you agree to them
  • A follow-up visit is quoted the same way

What happens during the visit

Everything a clinic consultation covers, minus the travel and the waiting room, plus the one thing a clinic can never offer: the doctor sees the patient in their own surroundings.

History and examination

  • What started when, and how it has changed
  • Blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen saturation
  • Listening to the chest, examining the abdomen
  • Throat, ears, skin and wounds as relevant

Diagnosis and prescription

  • A working diagnosis explained in plain language
  • A written prescription, the same as in a clinic
  • Existing medicines reviewed for clashes and duplication
  • What to watch for, and when to call back

Tests, if they are needed

  • Blood samples collected at home by a technician
  • Reports sent to you and to the doctor
  • A referral where imaging or a specialist is required
  • Told plainly if the patient should go to a hospital

Care arranged afterwards

  • A nurse for injections, drips or dressings on the same prescription
  • An attendant where daily living has become difficult
  • Physiotherapy where mobility is the problem
  • A follow-up visit if the case needs reviewing

Doctor home visits for elderly parents

The commonest reason families in Mumbai book a visit. For an elderly parent the clinic means stairs, an auto or a rickshaw, a waiting room full of coughs and an hour on a hard chair. More often than not the trip gets put off until the problem has grown.

A visit at home also reveals what a consulting room hides. What is really in the fridge. Whether there is anything to grip in the bathroom. How many strips are open at once, and whether two of them turn out to be the same drug under different brand names, which happens constantly once a patient has been through several doctors.

If the visit uncovers something that needs ongoing support rather than tablets, the doctor will tell you plainly, and a nurse or an attendant can be arranged off the same assessment.

Before the doctor arrives

Keep these ready

  • Every medicine strip and box, not a written list. Packets show the exact strength
  • Old prescriptions, discharge summaries, recent reports
  • When the symptoms started and how they have changed
  • Known allergies, and any reaction to a drug before
  • Recent glucometer or BP readings if you take them at home
  • A well-lit place where the patient can be examined lying down

What affects how quickly a doctor reaches you in Mumbai

Worth understanding, because it explains why nobody serious will give you a guaranteed arrival time over the phone in this city.

The hour you call

A doctor crossing from Andheri to Bandra at 7pm and the same journey at 11pm are not remotely the same trip.

Evening peak is the slowest window of the day for us, and late night is often the fastest. We will tell you which you have landed in.

Which line you are on

Mumbai moves north to south far more easily than it moves east to west. A visit within the western suburbs is usually quicker to arrange than one that crosses the city.

Our own office is at Kandivali West, so the western line is where we are strongest.

Getting into the building

After about 10pm most societies stop letting an unannounced visitor through, and a doctor can lose ten minutes at the gate.

Tell your watchman a doctor is expected and give us the flat number and any gate instructions when you book.

Frequently asked questions

What is a doctor visit at home in Mumbai?

A doctor visit at home in Mumbai, often called doctor on call, means a qualified doctor travels to your flat rather than you travelling to a clinic. They take a history, examine the patient, check vitals, arrive at a working diagnosis, write a prescription and set up blood tests, a nurse or a specialist referral if the case needs one. It suits fever and infection, elderly parents who cannot manage the journey, recovery after a hospital stay, bedridden patients and routine check-ups.

Is a home visit doctor an emergency service?

No. If someone has chest pain, sudden breathlessness, weakness or drooping on one side of the face, slurred speech, a seizure, heavy bleeding, a serious injury, or is unconscious or barely responsive, call an ambulance on 108 or go straight to the nearest casualty department. Do not wait for a home visit. A doctor home visit is for illness that needs examining and treating but is not time-critical.

What can a doctor do at home, and what needs a hospital?

At home a doctor can take a history and examine the patient, check blood pressure, pulse, temperature and oxygen saturation, listen to the chest, diagnose common illness, prescribe medicines, order blood tests with home collection, dress a minor wound, adjust long-term medication and refer onward. What needs a hospital is imaging such as X-ray, CT or ultrasound, IV treatment beyond what a nurse can give at home, anything surgical, cardiac monitoring, and any condition where the patient may deteriorate quickly.

Do you provide doctor home visits for elderly parents?

Yes, and across Mumbai it is the most frequent reason families call. An elderly parent facing stairs, an auto and a crowded waiting room will usually put the trip off until the problem has worsened. A visit at home removes all of that and shows the doctor what a consulting room cannot: the state of the kitchen, whether the bathroom has a grab rail, and how many medicine strips are open at once. Reviewing that pile matters, because a parent seeing three doctors often ends up on the same drug twice under different brand names.

What should I keep ready before the doctor arrives?

Put every medicine strip and box on the table rather than writing a list, because the packet shows the exact strength. Add old prescriptions, discharge summaries and any recent reports. Note when the symptoms began and how they have shifted. Mention allergies and any past reaction to a drug. If you take BP or sugar readings at home, have the recent ones handy. Clear a well-lit spot to lie down, and tell the watchman a doctor is expected so nobody is held at the gate.

Can the doctor prescribe medicines and order tests at home?

Yes. The prescription is written during the visit, exactly as it would be in a clinic. Blood tests are arranged with a technician collecting the samples at your flat, and reports follow to you and the doctor. If injections, a drip or dressings are needed, a nurse is booked separately against that same prescription.

Will the same doctor come for a follow-up?

Wherever the Mumbai roster allows, yes. A doctor who saw the patient three days ago can tell whether they are actually improving in a way that reading notes never quite matches. When the same doctor is not free, the earlier visit notes and prescription travel with the case so whoever attends is not starting cold.

Is a home visit better than a video consultation?

Only when the patient needs examining, which is the whole distinction. A video call is faster and perfectly adequate for a refill, a report review or a simple follow-up. A home visit is what you want when somebody has to put a stethoscope on a chest, press an abdomen, look into a throat or an ear, inspect a wound, or properly assess a frail elderly patient. Nobody can examine a patient through a screen.
