If you are trying to lose weight, you have probably come across a hundred different weight loss procedures available on the internet. Don’t worry if captions like ‘lose 5 kg in 5 days’ or ’30 days weight loss challenge’ capture your attention, you are not alone!
Yes, you hear me right! Just like you and several others, I used to spend hours on the internet looking for an instant weight loss solution. Telling my part of the story, I was going to a thyroid specialist in Islamabad, who asked me to put down some weight. With each passing day, I used to find out about a new weight-loss method advocated by some social media influencers.
My confusion was rising just as my searches, but still no solution! One day I find out about the paleo diet that sounds like a sensible approach. I did a lot of research and found out some of the hidden facts behind the paleo diet. So, before going for a paleo diet, I suggest you read this article.
Let’s begin with the introduction of the paleo diet.
What is the paleo diet?
Paleo diet, also known as ‘caveman diet’ or ‘ancestral eating’ is basically a modified eating pattern that was followed before agricultural practices were common. The increasing popularity of this diet is due to the claims of reducing inflammation.
Paleo’s diet focuses on the consumption of the same nutrients which our ancestors were consuming in the early stone age: meat, nuts, fruits, seafood, and veggies. The diet also focuses on the consumption of whole, unprocessed food items.
What’s on the menu?
Well, a typical paleo diet allows you to consume several foods including;
- Nuts and seeds
- Lean meat
- Fruits and nuts oils
Apart from this, the paleo diet excludes several food ingredients from our diets as well. These are;
- Whole or processed grains
- Dairy products
- Processed foods and oils
- Veggies and fruits with a high glycemic index
- Cutting on salt and sugar
What are the benefits of the paleo diet?
A lot of research has been conducted on the benefits of a paleo diet solely or in comparison with other diets. There are certain well-understood benefits of paleo diets including;
- You ten to lose weight faster
- Your body becomes glucose tolerant
- Better control over your heart health
- High protein intake can help you to manage your calories better
- Few triglycerides are also good
All healthy foods, but what’s bothersome now?
Despite being a protein-rich and healthy diet, there are several concerns regarding the paleo diet. Some of these include;
1- No dairy!
The Paleo diet clearly restricts the intake of dairy products. Dairy products are a good source of calcium and Vitamin D that is directly associated with our bone health. Besides this, fermented dairy products naturally contain probiotics that help to make our digestive system more effective. So, limiting dairy products in all forms can be harmful to our health in the long term.
2- Low carbs
Although carbs are generally associated with weight gain and low carb intake is considered a good practice. But carbs are not as unimportant as they seem to be. Our body cells derive energy from carbs that act as a primary fuel. The Paleo diet restricts the consumption of carbs in our diet that can be quite harmful. Low carbs can account for muscle loss in our body as well can make it hard to work out.
A few days ago, I was attending a webinar on carbs and nutrition by a renowned nutritionist of Pims hospital in Islamabad, and she revealed that carbs are also associated with our reproductive health.
3- High fat intake
The Paleo diet is quite rich in saturated fats that are usually referred to as bad fats. These bad fats can increase our risk of developing certain diseases. Apart from cardiac diseases, high fat intake is also associated with certain types of cancers.
4- Hard to maintain for longer times
Besides carbs, the paleo diet also limits the intake of several other food groups from our diet. The exclusion of food groups reduces the variety and makes it difficult to manage to plan. Further, the absence of certain food groups can result in nutrient deficiencies.
All the health benefits and disadvantages of the paleo diet go side by side. Just like any other diet, we can’t completely agree with all aspects of this diet. However, eating the right food in the right quantity is the only way that can help you!
